New Wineskins project bears fruit for Executive Board

The Executive Board of the Diocese has been working with the results of the New Wineskins project begun in 2011. This project invited Southern Virginia to take a look at our mission, to listen and talk about who we are and what we are called to do and to be. An important step in this process was listening to the members of our parishes. Many of you took part in one of six regional meetings with Bishop Hollerith. The data gathered from those meetings has led our Executive Board to form three Focus Teams: Stewardship, Leadership Development and New Communities.

Stewardship:
The Stewardship Focus Team of the Executive Board is committed to helping broaden our understanding of stewardship for ourselves, our parishes as well as the entire diocese. We hope to meet parishes where they are and help them to move toward a greater understanding of the theology of stewardship and how our resources are being used to change the community and the world. A number of ideas emerged from our first conversation but a common theme was the need for better formation and education about stewardship as well as more direction for clergy and other leadership. Leadership needs to walk the walk and they need to be equipped for the walk. We have amazing stewardship stories in our diocese that are rarely shared and we recognize that the power of story needs to be harnessed and shared. A narrative diocesan budget would be an excellent beginning. We hope that we will move toward running diocesan stewardship in much the same way we run parish campaigns and we as a team are committed to reflecting that behavior as a model. Two specific initiatives that were suggested will continue to be discussed in the fall.

Leadership Development:
The Leadership Development Focus Team will center its efforts on three key areas: on the ground listening, evaluative work, and allocation of resources. At our first meeting, we identified a number ways Leadership Development is already being accomplished in our diocese, such as Fresh Start, Bishop's Days, Vestry Training days, CE-Net, EYC Board, and Youth Leader Trainings, to name a few. Then we brainstormed possible approaches and areas of focus for Leadership Development going forward, evaluating current initiatives with respect to both mission and budget priorities of the diocese. We discussed evaluating young vocations initiatives, allocating appropriate resources and exploring models for new clergy mentoring, and strategies to develop new recruitment and training for leaders at the parish level, including expanded vestry training and best practices for committee management. We intend to identify two to three primary areas of work for the next year.

New Communities:
The New Communities Focus Team of the Executive Board will be working with the Mission Network and the Church Plant Committee to strategize, support, and communicate the work of New Community efforts in our diocese. What do we mean by New Communities? Primarily it means new gatherings, ministries, or congregations that reach new people with the Gospel. It includes new church plants, multi-cultural ministries, emergent ministries, mission communities supported by one or more congregation that reach a particular group are area(new ministries like Mission of the Holy Spirit), rebirthing/redeveloping existing congregations, and churches collaborating or partnering in new ways. The New Communities Focus Team desires first to learn what "New Community" initiatives are currently taking place within our congregations. This fall, the Focus Team will hone in on specific goals for the upcoming year.

Presiding Bishop helps Old Donation celebrate 375 years

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and Bishop Hollerith took part in a weekend-long celebration of 375 years of worship at Old Donation, Virginia Beach. Founded in 1637, Old Donation is the first church to exist in Virginia Beach. On Saturday, the parish staged re-enactments of historic moments from its past. A choir concert featured a performance of Vivaldi's "Gloria", and held a banquet honoring Old Donation's former rector, the Rev. Beverly Tucker. On Sunday, the Presiding Bishop preached at all three services. Old Donation has an online photo album of the event that you can enjoy here. Saint Paul's College denied accreditation

Saint Paul's College has been denied accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Saint Paul's College has been in a probationary period with the association for two years, making efforts to address issues regarding debt and curriculum. The association has deemed those issues unresolved and has removed their accreditation. This decision makes the future of Saint Paul's College extremely uncertain, and may possibly mean closing the college. The college will file an appeal. Meanwhile, Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC, has agreed to assist with student placements for the fall term.

For 124 years, Saint Paul's College has blessed its students with opportunities for education, community and achievement. We give thanks to God for their ministry. Please keep the administration, faculty and students in your prayers.

Bishop Hollerith asks for your help in restoring Chanco

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you probably are aware, Chanco is one of our greatest spiritual assets in Southern Virginia. As is the case with any asset, it's vitally important to be good stewards of what's entrusted to us - Chanco being no exception. To that end the Chanco Board of Directors has been working incredibly hard to tackle both the immediate and long term issues surrounding our property. However they can't do it without your help.

I'm writing today to commend to you the Chanco restoration projects and ask you for your time to make them happen. Last summer an incredible effort was put into restoring the exterior of Conference Lodge A, which is just one of several buildings in need of a serious overhaul. This summer the board will be doing similar restorations of Lodge D, and they need your help to make it happen. Please plan on volunteering for either the pre-work weekend from June 8-10 or the work week, July 13 - 22. Everyone volunteering needs to contact Chanco's volunteer coordinator, Chuck Spence at  chspence_7@msn.com or 757-675-6311 so that the board can adequately plan for food and lodging.

Thank you for your support of Chanco and I look forward to seeing the work accomplished this summer.

Your Servant in Christ,
+Holly Hollerith

Presiding Bishop calls on all Episcopalians to help Saint Paul’s College survive

Saint Paul's launched its "Now & Forever" campaign last November with the goal of raising $5 million. With the May 17 deadline fast approaching, the college needs to close a $1.2 million gap in the drive. The fund-raising campaign, along with budget right-sizing and organizational re-structuring at Saint Paul's, are key elements in the school's drive to be reaffirmed with full accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in mid-June.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, in an open letter to Episcopalians dated May 1, said Saint Paul's "has played a vital role in the life of our church since its founding in 1888." "We need the leadership and service of these students and graduates in our common life. We also need your assistance to help the students and faculty" to "continue their strong record of achievement now and well into our shared future," the bishop added. "Our challenge is to share the abundance of our lives with these students and this institution, so that all might share in the gifts that are being raised up in classrooms, playing fields and volunteer programs in southern Virginia."

Investor Charles M. Royce and his wife Deborah are offering a $250,000 challenge grant of $1 for every $2 raised of unrestricted gifts through the May 17 deadline. The first $500,000 raised will become $750,000 toward the $1.2 million goal. "As Episcopalians, we share a deep, spiritual commitment to support educational institutions and strengthen communities," said Royce. "We take pride in Saint Paul's College and its important mission. With this gift, my wife Deborah and I hope to help ensure that Saint Paul's College will be able to continue to help young people fulfill their potential and serve and lead in their communities."

"We are humbled and honored to receive this support in our hour of need," said Saint Paul's College CEO and Interim President Eddie N. Moore, Jr. "For more than a century, Saint Paul's has evolved with the times, but remained united in mission with our founding Church to provide all students - and particularly the under served - with a strong sense of community, with spiritual guidance, and with a thirst for lifelong learning that would form them for service and leadership."

Preservation Virginia calls Talbot Hall endangered

On May 7, 2012, Preservation Virginia will issue a list of sites across the Commonwealth that face threats which would detract from their historic integrity. It is our understanding that one of the sites included on this year's list may be Talbot Hall.

If this is the case, Preservation Virginia will have made this decision without full knowledge of the facts surrounding the potential disposition of the property.

In a response to Preservation Virginia, Bishop Hollerith has made it clear that as the faithful duly-elected leaders of the Diocese of Southern Virginia consider the conveyance of the property for future use, they are being extremely careful to assure the preservation, and hopefully restoration, of the historic house. Indeed, the resolution passed at the Council of the Diocese of Southern Virginia in February specifies that the preservation of the historic house will be a primary consideration in its disposition. The decision regarding the disposition of the property will be made only after careful consideration by each of the more than thirty members of the Executive Board and the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Southern Virginia who are committed to follow the intent of that resolution.

The 34,000 people of the Diocese of Southern Virginia have been good and faithful stewards of the Talbot Hall manor house within the limits of our financial ability for more than 50 years. It is our intent to be nothing less than good and faithful stewards of this house as we consider its future disposition.

Easter Season reflection from Bishop Hollerith

"When one considers the various Easter accounts of the Risen Lord appearing to the disciples, it becomes clear that for the early Church the resurrection was much more complex and much richer in character than a single event fixed in time. The meaning of the resurrection was revealed not all at once, but gradually, with each appearance adding more depth to the rich texture of the disciples' personal and community experience of the risen Jesus. The beauty of the Easter season as we celebrate it in our tradition is that each Sunday we too learn a little more about the miracle - a little more about its startling implications for our lives." 170 year-old church threatened by eminent domain

Bishop Hollerith and other religious leaders from Virginia Beach joined Emmanuel, Virginia Beach, in their fight against that city's use of eminent domain. People and local media packed the church's sanctuary at a press conference on March 27.
"We are not here to debate the City's power to condemn private property for a public purpose. But in the case of Emmanuel Church, the effect of doing so, of taking land used for both sacred and community purposes, is to diminish the life of this community," Bishop Hollerith told the gathering. Bishop Anne Gimenez, the senior pastor of Rock Church International, said, "The city is taking what belongs to God. This ground was dedicated to God."

In 2001, less than two weeks after the completion of a $2 million expansion to their church facilities, the city announced plans to condemn a portion of Emmanuel's property to widen and relocate a six-lane road behind the church. For well over a year, Emmanuel's Road Committee has patiently sought to negotiate with the City for fair compensation, including entering into mediation with an independent authority. A settlement offering land to Emmanuel but with no further financial compensation was accepted by the Vestry in June 2011 to resolve this conflict, even though it was well short of the damage estimated by appraisers. Since then, the City's legal and economic development departments have repeatedly whittled away at the proposed settlement. The City now seems intent to press a lawsuit against Emmanuel in court on October 16th in order to compel the church to accept its inadequate offer as fair compensation for the land and its damage to the historic church.

You can learn more about Emmauel's fight with the City of Virginia Beach at their website, saveemmanuelvb.blogspot.com. You can also join them on Facebook, facebook.com/SaveEmmanuelVB.

Parish UTO Coordinators are reminded and encouraged to use every creative way possible to bring out the best in parishioners - young and old - as we go into this important phase of our mission to "give thanks for our blessings and, in turn, give generously to those who are in need." April is UTO ingathering month and we are asking that you send contributions to your diocesan UTO Coordinator by the third week in May. Your ingathering are to be sent to your newly appointed UTO Treasurer: Rosalyn Neal, ECW of Southern Virginia, 4661 Truman Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.

SCLM issues report on blessing of same-gender unions

The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music (SCLM) of the Episcopal Church has forwarded to the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies excerpts from its report, "I Will Bless You, and You Will Be a Blessing": Resources for Blessing Same-Gender Relationships. The report, nearly three years in the making, was prepared by the SCLM in compliance 2009-C056, "Liturgies for Blessings,"  a resolution  approved by the General Convention (GC) of the Episcopal Church in 2009 which directed the SCLM to collect and develop theological and liturgical resources for the blessing of same-gender relationships through an open process. Excerpts from the report are being made available for discussion at the upcoming House of Bishops (HOB) meeting in March. Members of the House of Deputies (HOD) will discuss the excerpts in the online forum on the website of Bonnie Anderson, HOD President, http://houseofdeputies.org/deputy-online-forum/.  The discussion on the Deputy Online Forum will take place March 16-23 and is available to the public for viewing. In addition, excerpts are also being made available to the wider church on Anderson's website:http://houseofdeputies.org/blessingexcerpts.

"Since 2009, the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music has consulted widely throughout the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion," said the Rev. Dr. Ruth Meyers, Hodges-Haynes Professor of Liturgics at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and chair of the SCLM. "Providing our report to the church's two legislative houses, the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies, is the next step in our open process. We look forward to their discussions and to presenting our report to General Convention in July."

The excerpts released March 8 include a theological reflection on blessing same-gender relationships, a proposed liturgical rite, and the legislative resolutions that the SCLM will recommend to GC12 in Indianapolis July 5-12.
